TMS works without medication, so nothing enters your bloodstream and the weight changes, sleep disruption and sexual side effects linked to antidepressants aren’t part of it. There’s no anesthesia, you’re awake throughout, and most people carry on with their normal routine. The most common side effect is a mild headache or scalp discomfort early on.

WHO'S IT FOR
When TMS tends to be a good fit
Adults and adolescents (15+) whose symptoms haven't improved enough with medication.
- Antidepressants have helped, but not enough
- Side effects have made medication hard to stay on
- You'd prefer a non-medication option
- You need a treatment with no recovery time
- You have a history of seizures or epilepsy
- You have metal implants or devices in or near your head
- You have a cochlear implant, deep brain stimulator or aneurysm clip
- You have any other safety considerations that may affect TMS treatment
We screen for all of this before anything is scheduled. If TMS isn't the right treatment for you, we'll tell you.

She told me that my voice sounded “brighter”
At age 67, after requiring medicine for depression for about 35 years, I feel blessed to have discovered State Street TMS. I had taken just about every SSRI and SNRI available and ALWAYS at some point I felt like my brain would become reticent to the effect of the drug… I was done with this pharmaceutical merry-go-round and THANKFULLY transcranial magnetic therapy worked!
Every single day I am grateful to all the staff at State Street TMS. The atmosphere felt warm, inviting, and comfortable and the staff always did their best to accommodate any scheduling changes I needed. The best testimonial I received was from a lifetime friend whom I haven't physically seen for 6 years… she told me that my voice sounded “brighter” when we telephoned over the holidays!

Questions
What people ask before they call
What if TMS isn't right for me?
We'll tell you at your evaluation and talk through other options. We'd rather get you to the right treatment than start one that won't help.
Do I have to stop my medication?
No, in fact we recommend that most people stay on their current medications during treatment. That being said, any change is a decision between you and your prescriber.
I've already tried other treatments. Does that matter?
Not at all. TMS is most often used precisely when medication or other treatments haven't done enough on their own.
Is this the same as ECT?
No. ECT needs general anesthesia and induces a seizure. TMS is done while you're awake, with no anesthetic and no recovery time.
